About Me

My name is Jenny DeReis and I am owner and therapist at Validity Counselling in Prince George BC. I have worked in the helping profession for over 25 years, and as a therapist for the past 12 years. I received my Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Calgary, and I’m  registered with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. I completed the Comprehensive Training in DBT with Charlie Swansen, author of DBT Principles in Action, and partner with Marsha Linehan sine the inception of DBT in the 1980’s.

I have level two training in Gottman Marital Therapy and have level 4 training in CBT with Aldo Pucci, founder of Rational Living Therapy. I received a certificate in substance use through the Justice Institute in B.C. In addition I have training in Reality therapy and Focusing. In individual therapy I primarily counsel from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Therapy (DBT) approach. Both approaches focus on the way that our emotions, thoughts, and behaviours interact together to form effective or ineffective methods of coping. Changing the way we think strongly impacts the way we feel and the way we react to situations.

DBT was developed by Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington and it’s the most comprehensive and recommended treatment for issues related to emotion dysregulation.

To learn more about DBT check out “What is DBT,?” on the front page menu.
